Profile

Richard Maurer has been perfecting his craft for over 25 years in the music and recording industry.

As a performer, Richard has been playing percussion since the age of 18.  Starting off as a self taught drum set player, he then pursued a degree in music from the University of Akron where he graduated with a Bachelors degree in percussion performance.  While there he was exposed to the steel drum and that is where the passion for this instrument began.  Over the years he has performed with such artists as Anne Cochran, One Wish, Jonah Koslen, The Island Doctor, Pat Daily, Macaw, Gypsies in the Palace, Mike "Mad Dog" Adams, The Raybans, FasTrack, and more.  Shades of Steel began during those college years and has matured into what it is today.

As a recording engineer and sound designer, Richard’s work has been seen in documentary films, short films, and across the networks with such clients as McDonalds, Kay Jewelers, Wyndham Hotels, Purell, Goodyear, Meineke, Sherwin-Williams, Dirt Devil, GE, the Cleveland Indians, Browns, Cavaliers, and many more regional and national clients.  In addition to earning a number of Addy and Telly awards, his recent work with the University of Akron on the documentary "Hammer on Steel" earned him two Emmy nominations.  His dedication to the community includes ongoing projects with the University of Akron Steel Drum Band where one of his projects earned him a Grammy nomination.  Richard has gained the reputation of being a consummate professional and is sought after for all facets of music production, sound design, commercials and post-production work.
